The Benefits of Meditation

Meditation is gaining attention as a potential way to maintain well-being and good health. It can calm your mind, relax your body, and soothe your spirit. In addition, it's inexpensive and its risks are minimal.

Meditation techniques aren't new. They've been around for thousands of years. Anyone can meditate, regardless of religious or cultural background.

Consider these suggestions from the Mayo Clinic to get you started:

Select a meditation technique that fits your lifestyle and belief system.

Many people build meditation into their daily routine.
Set aside some time. Start with five-minute meditation sessions once or twice a day and work up to 20 minutes each time.

Keep trying. Be kind to yourself as you get started. If you're meditating and your attention wanders, slowly return to the object, sensation, or movement you're focusing on.

Make meditation part of your life. Many people prefer to start and end their day with a period of meditation. Others prefer to take meditation breaks during the day. Experiment and find out what works best for you.

One of the most important health benefits of meditation is how it releases stress from our bodies. Meditation practiced regularly will lead you to a deeper level of relaxation and contemplation. If you want to be free of constant worry, pressure and stress meditation can give you a life that is calm, peaceful, happy and relaxed.

A number of studies show that meditation may help enhance pain management. For instance, one study published in 2010 found that a brief training in mindfulness meditation significantly reduced sensitivity to pain. Another 2010 study suggests that meditation may increase thickness in certain brain regions involved in regulating pain and emotion. Earlier research indicates that meditation may also help ease pain in people with chronic pain-causing conditions, such as fibromyalgia and low back pain.

I usually practice meditation after my work day...Exercises at the yoga course helped very much. Now I can really relax and fresh my mind after the hard work. So I advice everybody to do meditation with trained teacher first. Then you can do it by yourself at any place....even in the crowded bus or tram.
